The Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) Board has unanimously approved Superintendent Yolonda Brown’s FY 25 Investments in Capital Improvements, paving the way for critical improvements to all nine schools, enhanced curriculum resources in ELA and Math, and staff retention efforts.

Superintendent Brown’s plan reflects a firm commitment to ensuring Petersburg students have access to improved learning environments, high-quality instructional resources, and dedicated educators who remain invested in the district’s success.

“This is a pivotal moment for Petersburg City Public Schools,” said Superintendent Yolonda Brown. “I am deeply grateful to the School Board for their support and partnership in advancing real progress for our students. Their commitment to these investments reinforces that we are moving forward—together—for a ‘New Day, New Way’ for PCPS.”

PCPS Board Chairman Kenneth L. Pritchett emphasized the Board’s commitment to keeping students, schools and staff at the center of decision-making.

“This is an example of the School Board keeping our schools, students, teachers, and staff first,” said Pritchett. “We are excited to support these investments because they directly impact the success of our students and the strength of our school community. This is how we will continue to build a better future for Petersburg.”

The approved investments focus on three key priorities:

• Capital Improvements Across All Nine Schools – Addressing infrastructure needs to create improved school environments that students are proud to learn in.

• Enhanced Curriculum Materials – Strengthening academic instruction through high-quality curriculum resources that support the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and the division’s new instructional framework.

• Staff Retention Efforts – Prioritizing investments in educators and staff, ensuring PCPS can show appreciation and retain top talent to drive sustainable improvements.

“Our schools must be places of inspiration and academic excellence,” Brown continued. “With these investments, we are taking action to revamp our academic infrastructure, enhance teaching and learning, and support the incredible staff who make this progress possible.”
