Welcome to the Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) Practical Nursing Program! Whether you are a high school student eager to launch your healthcare career early or an adult learner answering the call to serve your community, our program provides a comprehensive academic foundation, extensive clinical experience, and a supportive environment. We pride ourselves on offering small, focused classes led by our team of dedicated, expert educators who are committed to your success.

Our 18-month curriculum is fully approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing and authorized by the Virginia Department of Education. Combining high-fidelity simulation, classroom instruction, and extensive hands-on clinical rotations across acute, long-term, and community care settings, PCPS PN program prepares graduates to deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based care to diverse patient populations. The Virginia Department of Health Professions Board of Nursing does not require national accreditation for Practical Nursing Programs (18VAC-90-27-220).

Five-year NCLEX-PN pass rates are as follows:

  • 2024  100%
  • 2023  0%*
  • 2022  57.14%
  • 2021   66.7%
  • 2020  33.33%

*There were no graduates in the year 2023.
 

Program Details:

  • 2026-2027 Tuition Cost for the whole program-$11,399 (subject to change).
  • Our PN Program is an 18-Month Program over 2 calendar years.
  • Over 400 hours of direct client care across hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community health settings.
  • Students who complete the required coursework mandated by the Board of Nursing while enrolled in our program are eligible to sit for the Nurse Aide certification. For more information on eligibility, click here.   
  • Graduates earn a Diploma in Practical Nursing to qualify for NCLEX-PN licensure.
  • At this time we do not accept any federal aid, G3 or GI Bill programs. Please get more information from your employer regarding employee tuition assistance.

Evening Classes Only Starting August 2026:

  • Phase 1 Evening Class Hours: 5:30pm-9:30pm Monday through Friday (subject to change)
  • Phase 2 Evening Class Hours: 5:30pm-9:30pm Monday through Friday (subject to change)
  • Clinical rotations are on Saturday's (subject to change)
  • Evening classes can be held at our Board of Nursing approved satellite campus Tricities Hospital 411 W Randolph Rd, Hopewell, VA 23860
  • The Adult PN Program does not always follow the PCPS District school calendar (subject to change)
  • High school and Adult Student Admission requirements, are located in the PCPS PN Program Student Handbook below.
  • Adult students 18 years old or older must have an official high school transcript that is from a high school accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Secretary of Education or have a valid GED.

 

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is required with an overall score/minimum composite score of 65%. The TEAS test is NOT the only component used to determine admission into the program. We do not offer TEAS testing on site. For more information on the TEAS test click here
