PETERSBURG, VA (March 7, 2026)—The Petersburg High School (PHS) Boys’ Varsity Basketball team will advance to the Virginia School High League (VHSL) State Championships. After they won handily against Western Albemarle in the State Semifinals on March 6, 2026 and Meridian High School in the State Quarterfinals on March 3, 2026, the team will now face off against Lake Taylor High School (LTHS).

This will be the first time the PHS Boys’ Varsity Basketball team has qualified for the State Championships since 2022. The team has dominated on the court throughout the season under the direction of esteemed Head Coach and Assistant Athletic Director Tytrail White. Coach White, a Petersburg High School alum and Virginia State University graduate, has over 20 years of coaching experience and has been named the VHSL Coach of the Year six times. Under Coach White’s tutelage, the boys’ varsity basketball team is nearing the end of their season with a 21-4 record.

“I am beyond proud of the team’s hard work, camaraderie, and success this season. Their stats this season and their qualification for the State Championship are a testament to their skills and teamwork. They are playing at the highest level of athletic competition and I know they are looking forward to the challenge of playing in the State Championships against another skilled team,” said Coach White.

The State Finals will be played on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Virginia Commonwealth University. Tickets can be purchased at the Virginia Commonwealth University Siegel Center (Box Office).
