Summer Academy 2026

PCPS Summer Academy is an exciting opportunity that provides elementary, middle, and high school students with multiple options for enrichment, S.T.E.A.M. career exploration, credit recovery, and remediation.  

Summer Academies will be held at the following PCPS school sites: 

Cool Spring Elementary for grades K-5 and Vernon Johns-Blandford 6 Middle School (main campus) for grades 6-12.

(K means students who have already completed Kindergarten and will be rising 1st graders in fall 2026)

 

K-5 STUDENTS

Phase I- Targeted invitations from the schools will go out to families for K-5 students. 

Phase II- Student Registration will begin on May 1, 2026, for K-5 students.  Applications will be available online, with a few paper forms available at all schools.

 

6-12 STUDENTS

April 9, 2026, for students in grades 6-12. 

Applications will be available online, with a few paper forms available at all schools.  

 

The deadline to register for Summer Academy 2026 is May 26, 2026.  

For Power Scholars (K-5) and Full STEAM AHEAD (4th and 5th Grade), the deadline is May 15. 

There will be a cap on the number of registrations, and students may not be permitted to attend if they attempt to register past the deadline. 

 

Summer Academy 2026 dates are: 

Full session

Grades K-5 = 4-week Session- June 15 - July 9, 2026

Grades 6-8 = 4-Week Session- June 15 - July 9, 2026

Grades 9-12 = 5-Week Session- June 15 - July 16, 2026

 

  • Grades K-5  Power Scholars Academy (4 weeks)

(K means students who have already completed Kindergarten and will be rising 1st graders in fall 2026)

  • June 15, 2026 - July 9, 2026 - Monday through Thursday, with Fridays reserved for the following:

  • Academic activities and field trips will take place for K-5 Summer on Fridays, directed by the Petersburg YMCA

  • (Attendance is required on Monday-Thursday to be eligible for any Friday activity/field trip. (More information is available once the YMCA receives a separate completed registration form for the Power Scholars Academy Program. Once you register for the PCPS Summer Academy 2026, you will be automatically enrolled in the YMCA program. 

 

Grades 6-8 (4 weeks)

  • June 15, 2026 - July 9, 2026 - Monday through Thursday 

Grades 9-12 (5 weeks)

  • June 15, 2026 - July 16, 2026 - Monday through Thursday 

 

Summer Academy locations:

  • Cool Spring Elementary School for grades K-5 (Fridays will be reserved for field trip days for K-5 students with the Petersburg YMCA exclusively)

  • Vernon Johns-Blandford 6 MS (main campus) for grades 6-12

 

Summer Academy Grades 6-8 dates:

  • Summer Academy dates run from Monday, June 15, 2026 to Thursday, July 9, 2026

Summer Academy Grades 9-12 dates:

  • Summer Academy dates run from Monday, June 15, 2026 to Thursday, July 16, 2026

 

NEW HOURS FOR 2026!

Summer Academy hours:

 

  • Grades K-5 Summer Academy hours are from 9:30 AM- 2:30 PM, including select Fridays for field trips

  • Grades 6-8 Summer Academy hours are from 8:30 AM- 12:30 PM  

  • Grades 9-12 Summer Academy hours are from 8:30 AM- 3:30 PM  

(Students taking only one credit recovery course will be released at 12:30 PM)

Summer Academy Attendance/Truant Protocol

  • After a student has incurred one unexcused absence, the teacher will attempt contact with the student’s parents or guardian;  this attempt shall be recorded in the designated form. If a student has incurred two unexcused absences, the Summer Academy site administrator will attempt to make contact with the student’s parent or guardian; this attempt shall be recorded in the designated form. 

  • Additionally, the Summer Academy AP/Coordinator(s) will send an attendance warning letter to the students’ registered mailing address. If a student has incurred three unexcused absences, the Summer Academy AP/Coordinator(s)  will attempt to contact the student’s parents or guardian.  

  • If a student fails to improve their attendance after these contact attempts, they will be withdrawn from Summer Academy.
