Sales tax holiday

  • During Virginia's annual tax-free weekend, everyone can buy qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items and Energy Star and WaterSense products without paying sales tax. The next sales tax holiday will be Aug. 2-4, 2019; it starts the first Friday in August at 12:01 a.m. and ends the following Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Click here for details.

Kickback 2 School

  • This is the 14th annual Kickback 2 School event: 1-5 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Petersburg YMCA. Free haircuts, ponytails, nail painting, face painting, music, games and fun. Free backpacks for Petersburg students. Click here for a flier.

Backpack giveaway

  • Petersburg students can get free backpacks at the fourth annual giveaway hosted by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Alpha Omega Zeta Chapter. The event will be 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 3 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St. Click here for a flier.

Back 2 School Event

  • A charity basketball game between Petersburg and Chesterfield, free school supplies, food and music make up the 12th annual Back 2 School event starting at 6 p.m. Aug. 17 on the grounds behind Blandford Academy 816 E. Bank St. Click here for a flier with details.

Back-to-School Expo

  • A Back-to-School Expo sponsored by WRIC Channel 8 offers fun and resources 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 3 at Chesterfield Towne Center. There will be performances, prizes and more. Click here for details.

Health and Resource Fair

  • To celebrate National Health Center Week, Appomattox Area Health and Wellness Center and Petersburg Health Care Alliance invite families to a Health and Resource Fair 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 8 at Union Train Station. Click here for a flier.

Education Expo

  • Students are encouraged to register for the Education Expo taking place Sept. 14 at Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 2223 S. Crater Road. Workshops will focus on developing a college application timeline, identifying and applying for scholarships, developing a competitive application packet and navigating the financial aid process.     On Sept. 14, check-in begins at 9:15 a.m. College admission representatives will be available 9 a.m.-noon. The welcome will begin at 10 a.m., and the expo will end at 2 p.m. The Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is organizing the Education Expo.
