Believe in Petersburg schools!
Petersburg City Public Schools is changing in order to become a beacon of hope in a community where education offers a path to a better life. There is no question that Petersburg students can accomplish anything if we believe in them and provide engaging and relevant learning opportunities.
Although he planned to retire in June 2016, Dr. Marcus J. Newsome was recruited to become Petersburg’s superintendent in order to turn around the public schools. This experienced and highly successful superintendent brought in an experienced leadership team that is energized and determined to make a difference. Since the summer of 2016, the team has been working alongside longtime Petersburg teachers and educational leaders to help students and schools achieve success.
Community support for public education is traditionally strong in Petersburg, and the superintendent and Petersburg School Board are tapping into that resource. Community partners — including churches, businesses, universities and civic groups — support students and teachers in vital ways, including mentoring and tutoring. A new organization called Petersburg Promise is helping coordinate community partners so that each student and every school is supported.
Individuals and organizations throughout the state are pitching in to help Petersburg schools succeed. That includes Virginia’s governor, who reached out in 2016 to ask retired educators to apply to work in Petersburg schools. Virginia allows retired teachers to work in Petersburg schools and earn a full salary while continuing to receive VRS retirement pay. This encourages experienced educators to return to the classroom and teach in schools that need their expertise, insight and talents. Several retirees are taking advantage of this opportunity to make a difference in Petersburg City Public Schools while boosting their finances.
“I believe” has become the school division’s motto. Educators and administrators who believe in the power of public education should click here to see the employment opportunities. New graduates, career switchers, educators ready for a change and retired teachers are all encouraged to apply to be part of Petersburg City Public Schools.
Petersburg City Public Schools offers a once-in-a-career opportunity to be part of something big. The children of Petersburg have been waiting far too long for an education that will enable them to successfully compete with students on the other side of the Appomattox River, on the other side of the United States and on the other side of the world.
